*** Dual Purpose Installation
Instructions:

Find the main water supply line. If you're not
sure how to do that
First identify the three different media that are in the boxes.
Water Softening Resin: Reddish or orange in color. It feels wet to the touch and often comes in
a white bag. If you have a unit with more than 1 cubic foot of resin it may have some resin in a clear
bag or some other type of bag. (The warehouse people often use what's handy for partial bags. They think
it is environmentally correct.). PLEASE NOTE: The only thing that goes in the softener tank (which
is the bottom one) is water softener resin (often referred to as "media").
Gravel:
Resin:
Carbon:

A multi colored rock or pebble that is used as a
bed or base for the carbon. It goes in the top tank first and then you
put in the carbon.
Activated Carbon: A black granular substance. There will be substantially more
carbon than
there will be gravel.
Assembly of your new unit:

Slip the white outer tank sleeve up and off if the riser tube (the tube that goes down the middle of
the tanks). Leave the riser tube in the bottom tank at all times.

here.
Once you slip the outer sleeve or jacket off of the tank you will see a tank with a long tube sticking
out. Where the tube goes into the top of the tank there is a large plastic connector that normally
connects the two tanks. Unscrew that connector from the bottom tank but do not remove the riser tube from
the tank. Just lift it up enough to add the water softening resin.
PLEASE NOTE: Sometimes the resin gets "clumpy" in humid climates. The best tool or funnel we have
found is cutting a plastic gallon milk jug in half and using the top half. Be patient it will only "SEEM"
like it is taking forever. And, believe it or not, most little kids love to load the stuff because it
feels so unusual. It seems wet to the touch but it doesn't make your hands wet.
Once the resin has been added screw the connector back on to the bottom tank. Slide the top tank back
on and carefully tighten tank back on. Be careful not to "cross thread" or you may have to wait for us to
send you another connector. What a drag that would be.
Put in all of the gravel being very careful not to get anything in the top of the riser tube. You
might want to to put a sandwich baggie over the top of the tube and wrap a rubber band around it
temporarily. Don't forget to take it back off right before you attach the control valve (head of the
unit).
After you have put in all of the gravel load the activated
carbon. It is quite dusty at times so you
may want to wear a mask or hold your breath while loading. And we would recommend not wearing your
favorite Sunday white duds. Of course you will shortly have clean water to clean them up with.
Once the carbon is loaded simply fill the tank with water (unless you have already cut into your pipes
and have no water at this point. What were you thinking?).
Turn the control valve upside down and make sure the o-ring on the bottom, that goes between the
control valve and the lip of the tank to seal it, has not fallen off into the shipping box. Spin it on
snugly. DO NOT over tighten.
PLUMB IN THE UNIT (If you have not done so already) and then follow the instructions that came with
the valve for start up. Those instructions at one point will likely tell you to put the unit in backwash
mode and rinse it. When you do this just keep in mind that the carbon will make the water run black for a
nominal period of time. Don't be alarmed. This is quite normal.
DRAIN LINE: Your drain line in most cases should be clear 1/2"
inner diameter flexible
plastic tubing that is available in almost all hardware stores. It is very inexpensive and requires no HARD
ELBOWS. Try to never use hard 90 degree elbows on your drain line. If you simply must use 1 or 2 you
may want to step up to a 3/4" drain or larger.
*** Actual customer's email:
Just wanted to say that I am very happy with the way my softener is working. I did however find
something that worked for me when I took apart the two tanks on my dual unit. That is the connector was
on kind of tight to the top tank so I used an old style oil filter wrench to remove the connector. Worked
like a charm, without doing any damage to the plastic connector, unlike a pipe wrench or channel locks
(if you have a pair that big)
Thanks,
Brett
