Manual for the Autotrol Timer Valve - This manual will show you specs and information about the Autotrol Timer water softener valve.

Manual for the Autotrol On Demand Valve - This manual will show you specs and information about the Autotrol On Demand water softener valve.

*** Note: Must have Adobe Acrobat in order to read manual.

Water Softener Assembly:

Find the main water supply line. If you're not sure how to do that Click Here.

You will find four basic components that need assembly:

1. Tank and riser tube (always leave the riser tube in the tank).

2. Softening media (usually reddish or orange in color). It feels almost "wet" to the touch.

3. Control valve (head).

4. Brine tank (salt holding tank).

NOTE: Water Softeners that are 75K or higher will have gravel that goes in BEFORE the softener resin.

You simply pour the water softening media (Resin) around the riser tube and into the water softener tank. Be sure to put something over the riser tube (sometimes the factory tapes them for you, don't forget to remove the tape before you put the head on) so that you never get any softener resin inside the tube. Never put anything in that tube other than water. Whatever you put in there may end up in the head.

Sometimes the resin gets "clumpy" in humid climates. The best tool or funnel we have found is cutting a plastic gallon milk jug in half and using the top half. A plastic funnel may have been provided for you.

Once the tank is loaded with softener resin you simply fill it with water and then "plumb it in". After that you simply follow the instructions that came with the control valve for start up. There will also be a bell shaped "basket"  this is to prevent any media from going inside of the control head.  Just place the "basket" underneath the valve and twist to lock it into place then slide the valve on to the rise tube and thread the valve on.

Brine Tank Assembly:

Simply connect the black plastic line from the side of the softener tank to the top of the water softener at the connection on the control valve and the brine tank through the connection on the side.

Brine tank line: The brine tank line (or salt tank line) runs between the brine tank and the control valve of the conditioner. There is a little insert that goes on the control valve end of the line. It usually comes in a little plastic bag. If they sent you one with the unit it goes on the control valve side. If you have a unit where they sent TWO little hose end inserts then put one in each end of the brine line hose. Most units only use one insert.

Loading salt into the brine tank: Once you have everything connected and you put salt in the tank, you can fill it as full as you like. Just don't have salt on top of the white tube in the brine tank. There is a little cap on the tube that is a bit flimsy. You just don't want salt piled up on that little cap (or lid).

Sometimes there will be a little "L" shaped connection for another small hole in the brine tank which is for you to hook up an emergency overflow line if needed. Just get it at your local hardware store.

Valve connections:

On every valve there is an IN line, an OUT line and a DRAIN line. The IN line is for the incoming water line from the home. The OUT line is for the treated water to travel from the unit to the home. The DRAIN line is to carry away waste water from cleaning, salting or backwashing the unit. Softener control valves have an additional line which goes to the salt tank.

DRAIN LINE: Your drain line in most cases should be clear 1/2" inner diameter flexible plastic tubing that is available in almost all hardware stores. It is very inexpensive and requires no HARD ELBOWS. Try to never use hard 90 degree elbows on your drain line. If you simply must use 1 or 2 you may want to step up to a 3/4" drain or larger.

If you purchased a "bypass valve" for your unit it will come with custom "tail pieces" such as 3/4" copper (which is the standard unless otherwise ordered) or PVC. Both are available in 1" as well. Unit shown is using a unit that is replacing a RAIN brand unit but keeping the bypass valve from the former unit. Click on the more pictures link below for more information.
